First-run Setup

A fresh ordinary profile opens a five-step setup wizard after the frontend can read backend health and a stable profile identity.

Complete the wizard

  1. Welcome introduces Chat, Canvas, Machine, and the Command Palette.
  2. AI Runtime saves a provider, endpoint, optional credential, and default model. For Ollama, only observed installed, completion-capable models are offered.
  3. Verify runs a bounded, non-generative provider check. First Chat is a separate optional generation that creates a short durable session.
  4. Memory performs a read-only Browse inventory check. It does not create or Recall a record.
  5. Ready records successful, failed, and skipped checks separately and lets you open Chat, Canvas, Models, or Machine.

Choose Save & continue in AI Runtime only after selecting the intended provider and model. Selecting a radio button alone does not persist anything.

No automatic model installation

If no completion-capable local model is installed, Ollama setup cannot save an invented choice. Open Models, explicitly install or select a suitable model, then retry. Embedding-only and capability-unknown models are excluded from Chat choices.

Understand what setup proves

Step Evidence created Boundary
Save runtime Configured and effective provider/model state Does not prove future reachability.
Verify provider Current bounded provider observation Does not send a Chat prompt.
First Chat A real generation and durable session evidence Does not authorize tools or a fallback model.
Check Memory Browse Current durable inventory observation Does not Recall, add, or change records.

Cloud credentials are write-only in the UI. Pioneer can reuse a stored credential for the same provider and endpoint without returning it to the browser.

Reopen setup

Open the Command Palette and choose Setup Wizard. Reopening setup reads the current configuration; it does not erase the profile. Wizard completion is remembered per stable profile ID in the browser, while a profile can also carry an explicit completion flag.

If setup behaves like the wrong environment, verify Machine → Machine identity and storage evidence before changing configuration. See Profiles & Data.
